Madras High Court is set to get two more judges, as the Supreme Court collegium on Monday recommended the transfer of two sitting judges, one each from the Karnataka and Telangana high courts.According to a statement released by the Supreme Court collegium, Justice Hemant Chandangoudar of the Karnataka high court and Justice Kasoju Surendhar, also known as K Surender, of the Telangana high court are to be transferred to the Madras high court.
The decision was made in meetings held on April 15 and 19, with the aim of promoting inclusivity and diversity at the level of high courts and strengthening the quality of the administration of justice, the collegium stated. The recommendation also included the transfer of five other judges to various high courts.
With this transfer, the total number of judges at the Madras high court will increase from 65 to 67, as against the sanctioned strength of 75.
Born on Sep 28, 1969, Justice Hemant Chandangoudar enrolled as an advocate on Feb 11, 1994. He was appointed as an additional judge of the High Court of Karnataka in 2019 and became permanent on Sept 8, 2021. Once transferred, he will occupy the 31st position in the seniority of the Madras high court.
Justice K Surender was born on Jan 11, 1968. He enrolled as an advocate in 1992 and was elevated as a judge of the Telangana high court on March 24, 2022.
