Actor-turned-political leader Vijay’s recent visits to Madurai and Coimbatore created scenes of chaos as thousands of his fans, mostly youngsters, swarmed the roads and airports for a glimpse of their idol. While the excitement surrounding his political entry is understandable, the unruly gatherings led to serious inconvenience for ordinary citizens. Traffic was thrown out of gear, public movement was affected, and in some areas, law and order was stretched thin due to the hysteric mob and lumpen elements that mingled with genuine fans. Vijay, who has now stepped into politics with a stated aim of serving the people, must recognise that public life comes with added responsibility. Encouraging or even silently allowing such disruptive gatherings only undermines the very values he claims to uphold. If he truly wants to be seen as a leader of the people, he must clearly and repeatedly urge his followers to behave responsibly, avoid public nuisance, and not turn every visit into a spectacle that harms the everyday lives of others.
The star-gazing youth who blindly follow their favourite actor must also realise that admiration should not translate into chaos. With great enthusiasm must come discipline. If these youngsters believe in Vijay’s political vision, they must support him by respecting public spaces and understanding the value of civic responsibility. The real strength of a leader lies not just in crowd-pulling, but in the ability to guide them towards order and purpose.
Moreover, the local administration and law enforcement agencies must not be mute spectators to such events. While the democratic right to assemble and welcome a leader is acknowledged, it should never come at the cost of public safety and order. Clear protocols must be established for political visits, especially those involving celebrity figures, to ensure that roads, airports, and emergency services are not crippled. Vijay’s team too should coordinate with authorities in advance and issue appeals for peaceful conduct, emphasizing that genuine support must never become a burden on society.
