The incident took place in Sathyamoorthy Nagar, Sundarapuram, Coimbatore. The victim, 80-year-old Manonmani, had been living alone since the death of her son Murugan three years ago. A few months ago, Manonmani received a compensation amount from the government as the legal heir of her deceased son.
Murugan’s son, 25-year-old Sivakumar, had reportedly been pressuring his grandmother to hand over the money. However, Manonmani had refused to give it to him.
On the afternoon of May 5, Sivakumar visited his grandmother’s house once again and demanded the money. A heated argument ensued. In a fit of rage, Sivakumar allegedly took out a knife he had brought with him, slit her throat, and fled the scene.
Upon learning of the incident, police rushed to the spot and have launched a manhunt for Sivakumar, who is currently absconding. Investigations are ongoing.
The gruesome act, driven by greed and betrayal, has stunned residents of the area, sparking conversations about the growing instances of violence within families over property and money.
