In a significant administrative move aimed at tightening surveillance and curbing smuggling activities, the Customs Department has undertaken a massive reshuffle, transferring 273 officers across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.This large-scale transfer includes Superintendents and Inspectors stationed at key points such as Chennai International Airport, Chennai Port, Thoothukudi, and other sensitive locations. The decision is seen as a proactive measure to bring in transparency, prevent malpractices, and strengthen anti-smuggling operations.
Sources within the department revealed that the reshuffle was conducted based on a performance review and intelligence inputs about certain officers allegedly being stationed in one post for extended durations. The aim is to avoid familiarity-based compromises and bring fresh vigilance to vulnerable areas.
Airports and seaports, especially those with a history of gold and contraband smuggling, have seen considerable changes in staffing. The newly appointed officers are expected to bring renewed energy and focus to ongoing operations, particularly ahead of increased travel and trade activity.
The Customs Department has been intensifying its efforts in recent months, with seizures of smuggled gold, narcotics, and banned items witnessing a spike. Officials believe that frequent transfers, coupled with data-driven monitoring, are essential for keeping smuggling syndicates in check.
