In a progressive step toward empowering women financially, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has announced a comprehensive plan to offer free vocational training across the city. With an allocated budget of Rs 7.50 crore, the initiative aims to provide skill development opportunities in various trades such as tailoring, embroidery, computer courses, and beautician training.
The decision was formalized during the monthly meeting of the Greater Chennai Corporation council, where a resolution was adopted to distribute Rs 50 lakh to each of the city’s 15 zones. These funds will be used to conduct special training classes in every zone, allowing women from those areas to enroll without any fees.
The Corporation outlined the training durations for the courses: tailoring and embroidery classes will comprise 270 hours of instruction per participant, beautician courses will include 240 hours, and computer training—covering programs like Tally—will offer 370 hours. Interested women can choose the course they wish to pursue and register at selected centers within their zones.
Chennai Mayor R. Priya emphasized the importance of this initiative, noting that empowering women through skill development can transform them into entrepreneurs and contributors to the city’s economy. The Mayor also highlighted plans to introduce special classes in Corporation schools, aimed at supporting children from low-income families who require additional care and attention due to both parents working.
Additionally, Mayor Priya requested Corporation Commissioner J. Kumaragurubaran to circulate instructions allowing councillors to utilize their funds for constructing hospitals in their respective wards, further enhancing public health infrastructure.
This multi-faceted approach by the GCC reflects its commitment to social welfare, women’s empowerment, and overall community development in Chennai.
