The Greater Chennai Corporation council on Wednesday passed several key resolutions to honor prominent leaders and social reformers.
As part of the meeting, the council approved the renaming of Bricklin Road in Purasaiwalkam to Maveerar Rettamalai Srinivasan Road, commemorating the leader`s relentless fight against caste oppression and his efforts to uplift marginalized communities.
In another significant move, the Corporation resolved to install a statue of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi at the Quaid-E-Millath Government College for Women, recognizing her contributions to the nation.
Mayor R. Priya also announced that the Corporation would explore the possibility of renaming Besant Road in honor of KR Venugopal Sharma, the artist known for painting the first image of the revered Tamil saint Thiruvalluvar.
Additionally, responding to longstanding requests from councillors, the Corporation unveiled a portrait of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar at the historic Ripon Building, further acknowledging his legacy and role in championing social justice.
These initiatives reflect the Corporation’s ongoing efforts to preserve history and honor those who shaped Tamil society and Indian democracy.
