The Tamil Nadu State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of the custodial death of Ajith Kumar in Sivaganga and has sought a detailed report from its Investigation Wing within six weeks.
In an order dated July 3, SHRC member V. Kannadasan directed the Inspector General of Police/Director, Investigation Wing to probe the case and submit findings. The action was taken following widespread media coverage and public outrage over the incident.
The State Government has already transferred the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has assured full support to the central agency’s probe. So far, five policemen — Anand, Siva, Prabhu, Manikandan, and Kannan — have been arrested, while Sivaganga SP Ashish Rawat has been transferred and placed on compulsory wait. A Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) has also been suspended.
Ajith Kumar, a 29-year-old temple security guard at the Bathrakaliamman temple in Thirupuvanam, died on June 28 after being interrogated by a special police team regarding a jewellery theft from a devotee’s car. His death has triggered statewide protests, sharp criticism from opposition parties, and serious concerns about custodial violence.
The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court also expressed strong concern, criticising the police and the state government for failing to prevent such brutality. While demands for NHRC intervention continue, the SHRC’s response marks a key step in ensuring accountability and justice.
