The AIIMS Medical College in Madurai’s Thoppur will start functioning from Pongal 2026, according to Anumanth Rao, Executive Director of AIIMS.Construction of AIIMS buildings in Thoppur began in March 2024. The project includes hospital blocks, a medical college, hostels, staff quarters, dining halls, and sports facilities. All these are being built in two phases over an area of 2,18,927 sq. metres. The estimated cost of the project is ₹2021.51 crore.
So far, 50% of the construction work is complete. Recently, 3D design models of the upcoming campus were shared on AIIMS Madurai’s official X page.
On July 4, a review meeting was held at the Thoppur campus, led by AIIMS Chairman Prashanth Lavania. AIIMS officer Anumanth Rao and other officials attended.
Speaking to reporters, Anumanth Rao said that students admitted in earlier years are currently studying in Ramanathapuram. The Thoppur campus buildings are almost ready, so classes will shift there from January 2026 during Pongal.
He added that the AIIMS hospital buildings will be ready and operational by 2027.
