The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has proposed a ₹83 crore project to improve public toilet facilities in key areas including Royapuram, Thiru Vi Ka Nagar, and Marina Beach. The project aims to construct 380 new toilet seats at 60 locations and introduce night shift maintenance for 750 existing seats, ensuring round-the-clock availability.
This new proposal follows the successful implementation of ‘Package One’, where 3,271 toilet seats were renovated across 260 locations in Zones 5, 6, and Marina. Acting on the directives of GCC Commissioner J Kumaragurubaran, the plan will now extend maintenance coverage to toilets in playgrounds and crematoriums as well.
As per zonal assessments, 260 new seats will be built at 25 spots, 99 will undergo minor repairs, and 17 will get major refurbishments. At Marina Beach, four toilets will be included under the current maintenance contract. The move aims to enhance hygiene and public convenience across the city.
