Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) General Secretary Premalatha Vijayakanth has officially announced that she will begin her party’s first phase of election campaigning on August 3. The launch will take place from Kummidipoondi in Tiruvallur district, a location that holds symbolic importance for the party.
Known as the “fiery corner” of Tamil Nadu, Kummidipoondi has historically been considered a lucky and powerful starting point for the DMDK. It is from here that party founder and late leader Vijayakanth began several of his past campaigns, and the party leadership believes that campaigns initiated here have often led to success. Following in his footsteps, Premalatha will flag off her campaign from the same location, marking the beginning of an intensive election strategy for the upcoming 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
Premalatha has also been actively working to forge alliances in preparation for the polls. According to party sources, DMDK is making strong efforts to form an alliance either with the ruling DMK or with the opposition AIADMK. Discussions are ongoing, and the party leadership is hopeful of finalising an electoral tie-up in the coming months.
Premalatha has further indicated that a major announcement regarding the alliance will be made on January 9, 2026, during the party’s state-level conference in Cuddalore. This has set the stage for a politically significant period ahead, as Tamil Nadu’s parties begin gearing up for what is expected to be a high-stakes election.
The DMDK’s decision to begin its campaign early signals a proactive approach, as the party looks to revive its presence and consolidate its support base across the state. With Premalatha taking the lead, the party is expected to focus its campaign on issues that resonate with the common people, while also invoking the legacy and charisma of its founder Vijayakanth.
The official announcement about the campaign launch has been released by the DMDK headquarters, and preparations are already underway in Kummidipoondi to mark the occasion with a public gathering and party mobilization.
With eight months to go for the elections, Premalatha’s early start reflects the DMDK’s intention to stay relevant in Tamil Nadu politics and possibly emerge as a crucial ally or influencer in the post-poll scenario.
