Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is embarking on a major beautification project covering three prominent locations in the city, including the iconic Broken Bridge in Adyar. The initiative is part of a larger plan to transform neglected or underutilised urban spaces into vibrant, community-friendly zones. Officials have confirmed that tenders for the project will be finalised within the next two weeks, covering a total area of over 29,000 square metres.
The locations selected for the facelift include the Broken Bridge area in Adyar (14,120 sqm), the space below the MRTS line near Indira Nagar Railway Station (6,176 sqm), and the area beneath the Velachery Rail Overbridge (9,270 sqm). According to CMRL Director (Projects) T Archunan, the technical bids were opened last week and the financial bids are currently being reviewed. The project will move forward based on a detailed feasibility study and project report.
At the Broken Bridge site, plans are in place to create a vibrant waterfront destination that promotes health, wellness, and tourism. Proposed features include adventure and leisure zones, an integrated health and mobility loop, beachfront cafés, walkways, landscaped areas, and upgraded public amenities. The design will incorporate sustainable and eco-friendly elements, along with provisions for inclusive access and designated parking.
Meanwhile, the space beneath the Indira Nagar MRTS line will be developed with an emphasis on recreational and cultural activities. The proposal includes walkways, children’s play areas, food and beverage outlets, event spaces, parking facilities, and other essential public services.
Inspired by the Kathipara Urban Square, the Velachery Rail Overbridge area will be developed into a civic hub. Plans include a festival market zone, pathways for pedestrians and cyclists, organised parking, enhanced lighting, and aesthetically designed public spaces.
The overall aim of the beautification project is to rejuvenate urban areas, improve public infrastructure, and encourage community interaction while also boosting tourism and the local economy.
