Chennai’s iconic double decker buses are all set to make a comeback by the end of 2025, reviving nostalgic memories for long-time residents while offering a new experience for today’s commuters. The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has confirmed plans to resume double decker operations in the city after a gap of nearly two decades.
Originally introduced in major cities like Mumbai and Chennai several decades ago, double decker buses were phased out in 2008 due to increasing traffic congestion and the construction of flyovers. Now, under the National Clean Air Mission, the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) has planned to introduce 20 electric double decker buses in the first phase.
These buses will be operated on a private contract basis. Tendering and contract finalisation are currently underway, and details such as fare per kilometre, maintenance, and operational expenses are being studied. The aim is to deploy these eco-friendly buses on high-traffic routes such as Kamarajar Salai, Anna Salai, and the East Coast Road (ECR) leading to Mamallapuram.
According to MTC officials, the double decker services are expected to commence by the end of this year. They also mentioned that depending on commuter demand, more buses could be added in the future. Double decker buses were first introduced in Chennai in the 1970s, withdrawn in the 1980s, and briefly reintroduced in 1997 on the 18A route before being discontinued again in 2008. The upcoming revival aims to combine nostalgia with clean, efficient urban transport.
