In a significant move aimed at transforming the way Physical Education (PE) is taught in schools, the Tamil Nadu government has announced that PE will now be given equal academic importance as core subjects like Mathematics and Science. For the first time ever, exclusive guidebooks will be introduced for PE classes from Class 6 to 10 in all government and government-aided schools across the state. The School Education Department has confirmed that these guidebooks will be structured, colourful, and designed with clear, step-by-step illustrations. The aim is to make exercises, sports techniques, yoga postures, Tamil traditional games, and first aid procedures easier for students to learn and practice. The visual aids are intended to enhance understanding and engagement, especially among young learners.
According to officials, the broader goal of this initiative is to identify and nurture sporting talent among school students, enabling them to excel in state, national, and international competitions. These age-appropriate guidebooks are expected to improve physical fitness, motor coordination, and sports skills through structured, engaging activities. The introduction of these guides marks a major shift towards treating PE as a serious and essential part of school education in Tamil Nadu.
