Property tax scam: Madurai Mayor’s husband arrested

Police have arrested Pon Vasanth, husband of Madurai Mayor Indrani, in connection with the ₹150 crore property tax scam in Madurai Corporation. He was taken to Madurai for questioning. The scam had earlier shocked Tamil Nadu politics. Following Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s orders, five ruling party zonal leaders and two standing committee chairpersons resigned. So far, 12 people, including a retired assistant commissioner, have been arrested. Nineteen officials, including bill collectors, have been suspended. The case is being investigated by a special team led by Madurai DIG Abhinav Kumar, based on an AIADMK case. In a related arrest, police detained Suresh Kumar, an Assistant Commissioner working in Thoothukudi.
