With quarterly holidays approaching, Chennai parents are being urged to help children develop a reading habit. Many kids today are stuck to mobiles or TV, missing out on the benefits of books.“Reading improves imagination, focus, and vocabulary,” said Shalini Rajan, a child education specialist. “Even 20 minutes a day can make a huge difference.”
Libraries and bookstores in Mylapore, Nungambakkam, and Anna Nagar are seeing more parents buying holiday reading material. “We’ve prepared special book packages for children aged 6 to 14,” said Vikram Sundar, a bookstore manager.
Parents are encouraged to set screen-free time and make reading interactive. “Read together, discuss stories, or let them create their own tales,” suggested Latha Menon, a Chennai resident.
Experts say reading builds curiosity, patience, and academic skills, making it an essential habit for children.
Many Chennai schools are also promoting reading through holiday reading challenges. Students are encouraged to read a set number of books and share summaries or creative projects in class. “These challenges make reading fun and rewarding,” explained Anand Krishnan, a teacher at a T. Nagar school.
Some parents are introducing storytime sessions at home, where the whole family participates. “It helps children enjoy stories more and develops their confidence in expressing ideas,” said Priya Narayan, a parent from Adyar.
City libraries are also organizing author interactions and storytelling sessions during the holidays. “Kids get inspired when they meet writers and hear stories behind the books,” said Ramesh Iyer, librarian at Nungambakkam Public Library.
