Commuters traveling from areas like Saidapet, Guindy, Kodambakkam, Anna Nagar, Nungambakkam, and Adyar to T. Nagar have a reason to rejoice. A newly constructed flyover between South Usman Road and CIT Nagar First Main Road is set to be inaugurated on 28 September. The 1.2 km-long flyover, built at a cost of Rs 165 crore, aims to reduce traffic congestion in busy T. Nagar. Construction began in June 2023, but the inauguration was delayed by six months due to pending police permissions required for demolition and reconnection from Burkit Road to the old flyover.
B. Shankaravelu, Chief Engineer (Bridges), explained that the new flyover connects the existing 0.8 km old bridge, allowing commuters to cover a 2 km stretch in minutes. He added that the structure would significantly ease traffic in the area.
The flyover was built using at least 4,000 tonnes of steel along with concrete, under the supervision of the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC). Tests conducted by IIT-Madras certified the safety and stability of the bridge.
The project was funded under the Infrastructural and Amenities Fund, with Rs 164.92 crore spent on construction. This is the first steel bridge constructed in Chennai by the Tamil Nadu government. Another steel bridge exists in the state, constructed by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI).
Once inaugurated, the flyover is expected to make commuting faster, safer, and smoother for thousands of people traveling to and from T. Nagar every day.
