Following the vibrant Diwali festivities marked by fireworks and celebrations, Chennai has experienced a significant deterioration in air quality. The city presented a dense smoggy atmosphere, with air pollution levels rising to concerning levels across various parts.The highest Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded in Perungudi at 229, categorizing the air quality as “Poor” and potentially harmful to sensitive groups. Other areas reported elevated AQI values including Manali at 175, Manali New Town and Velachery at 152 each, Arumbakkam at 146, Alandur at 127, and Ambattur at 100.The spike in air pollution is attributed mainly to the extensive bursting of firecrackers during the festival.
Health officials have warned that the deteriorated air quality may lead to respiratory problems among a large portion of the population, especially children, the elderly, and people with pre-existing respiratory conditions.
As a precaution, residents are advised to limit outdoor activities, use masks if necessary, and keep windows closed to reduce exposure to polluted air until conditions improve. Authorities have urged the public to consider environmentally friendly celebration methods in future festivities to minimize health risks and environmental impact.
