Chief Minister M.K. Stalin officially inaugurated the recently revamped Tholkappia Poonga in Chennai, marking a significant step in urban environmental development.
The eco-park, situated in Raja Annamalaipuram, has undergone extensive renovation at a cost of approximately Rs. 42.45 cr, transforming it into a state-of-the-art recreational and educational facility.
The reopening of the park has been highly anticipated, as it aims to promote environmental awareness among visitors and provide a green respite in the busy city. The upgrade includes modern amenities such as a new entrance gate, observation tower, visitor pavilion, children’s play area, and a 3.2 km walking track.
The project also features CCTV surveillance and a skywalk connection to Santhome Road, ensuring safety and accessibility for visitors. Originally conceived in 2008 by Karunanidhi and opened in 2011, the park had fallen into neglect over time, prompting the Tamil Nadu government to undertake a complete redevelopment.
The newly restored area now offers a clean, eco-friendly space with improved infrastructure on a 58-acre site that was once part of the Adyar backwaters.
During his visit, CM Stalin personally inspected the facilities, planted a Konrai sapling, and instructed officials to expedite the official reopening.
The revitalized Tholkappia Poonga is expected to attract thousands of visitors, including school children, for educational programs and leisure activities. It is also anticipated that the park will act as a habitat for various bird species, further contributing to Chennaiās ecological health.
The project exemplifies the governmentās commitment to sustainable urban development, blending ecological preservation with recreational needs for future generations.
