The Election Commission has informed the Madras High Court that Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls will begin in Tamil Nadu from next week.
This process aims to update and verify voter lists comprehensively ahead of the upcoming elections.
The SIR will include the addition of new eligible voters, deletion of names of those no longer qualified, and correction of any discrepancies in the existing electoral rolls.
The clarification was given during a hearing of a case filed by former AIADMK MLA Sathyanarayanan, who claimed that 13,000 AIADMK supporters’ names were removed from the voter list in Thiru. Nagar.
The Election Commission assured that the SIR will address such concerns by providing a thorough review and correction of the voter lists.
The Commission’s commitment to transparency and accuracy in the electoral process was emphasized during the court proceedings.
The SIR exercise is a crucial democratic mechanism ensuring all eligible citizens can exercise their voting rights without hurdles or errors in the voter lists.
This update will be essential in preventing exclusion or unwarranted deletion and must be conducted meticulously under the supervision of the Election Commission and relevant officials to maintain the integrity and fairness of the election process in Tamil Nadu.
