A month after the tragic stampede at a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) rally in Karur that claimed 41 lives, party leader and actor Vijay met with the victims’ families to offer his condolences and assurance of support.
The meeting took place at Bar Points Hotel in Mamallapuram near Chennai, where Vijay individually consoled family members of the deceased and the injured in a closely arranged, private session.
Following the stampede on September 27, which shocked Tamil Nadu and the nation, Vijay had announced financial aid of ā¹20 lakh for each of the families who lost loved ones, and ā¹2 lakh for those injured. The funds for the relief were promptly transferred into the bank accounts of the affected families by TVK.
Vijay had initially planned to hold the meeting in Karur itself, but logistical challenges and last-minute denial of venue permissions forced the change to Mamallapuram, causing some delay in personal visits to the victims.
During the meet, the families submitted written requests to TVK for assistance, including educational expenses for the children of the deceased.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, a judicial probe has been initiated, and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the investigation following a Supreme Court directive to ensure an independent inquiry into the incident.
Meanwhile, political reactions continue, with opposition parties voicing concerns and calls for accountability.
