Tamil Nadu School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi on Friday reiterated that the National Education Policy (NEP) cannot be implemented as a “one-size-fits-all model,” stressing that each state should have the autonomy to design educational programmes best suited to its own social and cultural context.Delivering a special address at the “New India Education Summit” in Chennai, the Minister said every state in the country has its own unique sentiments and priorities that must be respected while framing education policies.
“We realised that the NEP cannot serve everyone alike. Each district in Tamil Nadu has its own sentiment, awareness level, and educational needs — just as each state in India does. Therefore, states must be given the freedom to implement educational initiatives suited to their individual contexts,” he said.
Poyyamozhi emphasized that Tamil Nadu’s State Education Policy (SEP) focuses on preparing students with future-ready skills, especially in technology and innovation.
“In the SEP, we talk about the skills required for the future in terms of technology and knowledge. Our aim is to create an education system that reflects local needs while equipping students to compete globally,” he added.
The Minister also clarified that Tamil Nadu’s reservations about the NEP are not limited to the State alone, but are shared by several others across the country.
“That is why we say this is not just a concern for Tamil Nadu, but one for every Indian state,” he concluded.
