DMDK general secretary Premalatha Vijayakant has clarified that her recent “mushroom” remark was not directed at actor-politician Vijay, amidst speculation linking the statement to him.
Speaking ahead of the party’s ‘Makkal Urimai Meetpu Maanadu 2.0’ conference in Cuddalore, she emphasized the conference’s significance for the party’s future.
Premalatha reiterated that the event is designed to “teach a lesson to those who forgot gratitude, betrayed trust, and turned their backs on public welfare.” She used a metaphor to stress the importance of lasting political presence, saying, “No one can rise to prominence overnight. Those who sprout like mushrooms after a rain cannot endure.”
She contrasted this with the DMDK’s legacy, describing the party as a “banyan tree planted by Captain (Vijayakant)”—symbolizing deep roots and longevity.
Addressing the rumors, Premalatha stated, “I did not refer to Vijay as ‘a mushroom that sprouted overnight’. Vijay is like a child of our household. We have never opposed him. Just as he excelled in cinema, he should succeed in politics too”.
The party conference is scheduled to be held on January 9, 2026, at 4 pm in Pasar village, on the national highway in Cuddalore.
This event marks the first major party gathering after a decade and since the passing of party founder Vijayakant.
Premalatha urged all party cadres at various levels to mobilize people across Tamil Nadu to ensure a strong turnout.
She emphasized that the conference would lay the foundation for the DMDK’s preparation for the 2026 Assembly elections, calling it the “foundation for a collective victory.” Supporters have been encouraged to put up banners and flags in their regions as part of mobilization efforts for the event.
