The district of Thanjavur has endured continuous heavy rains over the past two days, causing significant damage and distress.

On the latest day, rain fell intermittently throughout the daylight hours, intensifying the already severe waterlogging situation affecting the area.

The relentless downpour has flooded approximately 4,000 acres of cultivated land, submerging young samba and thaladi paddy crops less than a month old, as well as some slightly matured crops. In several locations, including Ammapettai and Puttur, accumulated water is so widespread that the fields are barely recognizable, drowning the crops entirely.

Along with agricultural losses, the rains have caused structural damage to residences in the district. A total of 22 houses, including 13 hutments and 9 concrete homes, have partially collapsed or sustained damage due to the prolonged wet conditions.

Additionally, four livestock animals have died amid the flooding.Farmers in the region remain hopeful for sunlight, as they expressed that only intense sunshine could evaporate the excessive water and allow for a clearer assessment of crop damage.

For now, the communities are managing the ongoing rain and its fallout, awaiting relief and recovery measures.
