Madurai, Dec 6: Chief Minister M. K. Stalin will inaugurate a new 950-metre flyover at the Thirunagar–Melamadai junction on Sunday, officially naming it the “Veeramangai Velunachiyar Flyover.”

Built at a cost of ₹150.28 crore, the flyover begins at the Anna Bus Stand junction on Thondi Road, passes Aavin and Melamadai junctions, and connects to the Madurai Ring Road before extending toward Poovandhi in Sivaganga district. It is expected to greatly ease traffic on the busy corridor linking Madurai and Sivaganga districts — a route notorious for congestion at multiple choke points.

The naming honours Velunachiyar, a queen who fought colonial forces and reclaimed Sivaganga, marking a tribute to her legacy.
