A new 32-kilometre greenfield road connecting Karunguzhi on GST Road to Poonjeri on East Coast Road (ECR) is set to become a major relief for Chennai’s southern traffic flow. The project aims to reduce heavy congestion on the Chengalpattu–Tambaram stretch, which currently handles over one lakh vehicles every day.The new road has been designed as an alternative corridor, allowing vehicles to bypass the crowded GST Road and move smoothly toward coastal areas. Once completed, travellers will get faster and easier access to Mamallapuram, a major tourist destination that often sees bottlenecks, especially during weekends and holidays.
Officials say the project will also help in reducing fuel consumption and vehicle emissions, as the shorter travel time will lead to fewer idling hours on the road. The development is being implemented through the Public–Private Partnership (PPP) model, ensuring faster execution and shared investment.
With improved connectivity, lower pollution and reduced traffic load on existing routes, the new greenfield road is expected to significantly transform mobility across Chennai’s southern outskirts.
