OPS to float a new party after AIADMK snub?

Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam (OPS) faces a pivotal moment as he prepares a major decision on December 15 regarding his AIADMK Cadres’ Rights Retrieval Committee’s future, potentially transforming it into a full-fledged political party.

OPS has persistently pushed for rejoining AIADMK under Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS), including recent Delhi talks with Union Minister Amit Shah, but the party’s recent general council in Vanagaram shut the door on reintegrating OPS, TTV Dhinakaran, or Sasikala. EPS received full authority over 2026 Assembly election alliances, including BJP ties, while leaders urged unity to oust “traitors” and install EPS as Chief Minister again, signaling no room for expelled factions.

With Dhinakaran running Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) separately, OPS recently rebranded his group as “Urimai Meetpu Kazhagam” (Rights Retrieval Forum), unregistered as a party yet. Speculation mounts that failure to reunite with AIADMK could prompt OPS to formalize it as a new outfit, possibly allying with BJP for the 2026 polls, as cadre futures hang in balance amid NDA pressures for AIADMK consolidation.

An OPS supporter indicated behind-the-scenes merger efforts continue, but December 15 will clarify the next step.
