The Tamil Nadu government is set to acquire the remaining 33% stake in the Chennai Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) from Indian Railways for an estimated Rs 600–700 crore, bringing the entire system under state control.

Officials say the move will enable seamless integration with Chennai Metro Rail Ltd, strengthening the city’s urban transport network.

In addition, the state government is seeking Rs 4,000 crore in funding from the World Bank to modernise the 25-kilometre MRTS corridor, which stretches from Chennai Beach to St. Thomas Mount. The proposed upgrades include new coaches, modernised stations, escalators, and improved last-mile connectivity for commuters.

Officials emphasised that the initiative aims to transform the ageing MRTS corridor into a full-fledged Metro-style system by 2027, offering passengers a more comfortable, efficient, and reliable travel experience.

“This modernisation project will not only improve daily commutes but also integrate Chennai’s entire rapid transit network under a single management, making urban transport more user-friendly,” said a senior official from the state transport department.

With these steps, Tamil Nadu plans to create a unified, modern rapid transit system in Chennai, addressing growing urban transport demands and enhancing connectivity across the city.
