The construction of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Madurai has reached 42% completion as of November 30, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Prataprao Jadhav stated. The new AIIMS campus is being developed at Thoppur, near Madurai, over 220 acres.The project was first announced in February 2015, with the foundation stone laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in January 2019. Actual construction began on May 22, 2024, and is being executed in two phases.
The first phase focuses on key infrastructure, including the academic block, outpatient services, boysā and girlsā hostels, and essential service buildings. Construction is progressing round the clock, with AIIMS authorities earlier indicating the hospital could start operations by Pongal 2026.
Union Minister Jadhav confirmed that the target for completing the entire hospital has now been set for October 2026. He emphasized that the construction adheres to international standards, with attention to sustainability and long-term infrastructure quality.
Officials also highlighted that efforts are underway to start medical classes and outpatient services from the upcoming academic year. Currently, AIIMS Madurai Medical College is operating from the Ramanathapuram Government Medical College campus until the Thoppur campus is ready.
