A former BJP executive from Thiruparankundram, Karmegam, was arrested for making defamatory remarks against Thoothukudi MP Kanimozhi in a YouTube interview.
Karmegam discussed the Thiruparankundram hill lamp lighting issue, ordered by Madurai High Court but challenged by Tamil Nadu government in Supreme Court. During the interview, he made derogatory comments about Kanimozhi and spread false information on social media, prompting DMK backlash.
DMK zonal secretary Krishna Pandian filed a complaint at Thiruparankundram police station. Police registered a case under five sections, including Section 79 (obscene abuse), 196(1) (defamation), and inciting conflict between communities.
Following investigation, police arrested Karmegam, amid ongoing protests by Hindu groups demanding the lamp lighting as per court order.
