Madurai, Dec 19: A 40‑year‑old man, identified as P. Poorna Chandran from Narimedu in Madurai, has died by self‑immolation on Thursday, leaving the city in shock. Police say he set himself on fire near the Tallakulam police station, and his body was later taken to Government Rajaji Hospital. Authorities have registered a case and are investigating the incident.
Former Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai posted on social media that Poorna Chandran was deeply troubled after authorities did not allow lighting a traditional lamp on the stone pillar at Thiruparankundram hill, despite a High Court order. Chandran’s wife has filed a police complaint seeking a full investigation into the circumstances of his death. The family says he was a devotee and not linked to any political party.
