Chennai Metrowater is set to introduce smart water meters in nearly one lakh buildings across the city from early next year to promote efficient water use and better water management. Tenders for the project are likely to be finalised by the end of this month.In the first phase, the meters will be installed for high water users such as commercial establishments, industries, multi-storey buildings and large individual houses above 2,500 sq. ft. The âč392.59-crore project will cover both core city areas and merged zones.
So far, around 22,000 smart meters have already been installed, and bills will soon be generated based on actual water usage through IoT technology. Chennai Metrowater currently has around 17 lakh consumers.
The project, announced in the 2024â25 budget, was delayed due to technology selection, field studies and the tender process. It will function under the Hybrid Annuity Model, with the private concessionaire handling installation, meter reading and maintenance for 15 years.
Officials said the move will help reduce water loss, improve efficiency and cover nearly 80% of domestic connections by 2027.
