Moscow, Dec 20  Russian President Vladimir Putin, during his annual four-hour news conference, expressed confidence that Moscow’s military goals in Ukraine would be achieved if Kyiv does not accept Russia’s conditions in peace talks.
Putin claimed that Russian forces have “fully seized strategic initiative” and are advancing across the front line, with slower or faster progress depending on the sector.
He portrayed Ukraine’s forces as retreating in all areas while asserting that Moscow remains ready for a peaceful settlement addressing the “root causes” of the conflict, which include recognition of Russian control over Crimea and four key regions captured in eastern Ukraine, limits on Ukraine’s military, and official status for the Russian language.
Kyiv has rejected all demands but has indicated potential willingness to drop its NATO bid if backed by strong Western security guarantees.
Putin dismissed Western claims about Russian threats to Europe as propaganda and criticized NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, while highlighting the US’s neutral stance toward Russia in President Trump’s national security strategy.
He also blamed European elites for interfering in US politics and attempting to pressure Washington against Moscow.
On the domestic front, Putin showcased ongoing volunteer recruitment for the military, claiming over 400,000 volunteers this year, although independent verification is limited.
He addressed public concerns, apologizing to a soldier’s widow over delays in pension payments and pledging quick resolution.
The conference included questions from journalists and citizens nationwide, emphasizing Putin’s intent to project authority and responsiveness on multiple issues.
Meanwhile, Ukraine faces mounting challenges, including relentless Russian advances, energy facility attacks, and financial strain.
The EU agreed to provide an interest-free loan, but attempts to use frozen Russian assets were blocked by Belgium, highlighting tensions in Western support. Putin warned that using Russian assets for Ukraine would amount to “robbery,” potentially harming investor confidence in Europe.
Overall, the event underlined Russia’s military claims, Putin’s domestic control, and the ongoing stalemate in Ukraine, with the Kremlin emphasizing both readiness for negotiation under its terms and determination to pursue strategic gains on the battlefield.
