Chennai, June 24:
Tamil Nadu has strongly presented its case before the Cauvery Water Management Authority, seeking the release of 40 TMC of water from Karnataka to meet its immediate irrigation and drinking water requirements. The demand comes at a crucial time as the state prepares for the kuruvai cultivation season, which depends heavily on timely water supply.
During the meeting, Tamil Nadu officials emphasized that the state is facing a shortfall in water storage and requires adequate inflow to sustain agricultural activities. They pointed out that farmers are already under pressure due to delayed monsoon conditions, making the release of Cauvery water essential for crop survival.
The state also insisted that Karnataka must comply with the water-sharing formula laid down by the Supreme Court of India in its 2018 verdict.
According to Tamil Nadu, the monthly release schedule should be strictly followed to ensure equitable distribution among the basin states.
