Tamil Nadu police have imposed strict security measures and restrictions ahead of New Year celebrations, deploying around 1 lakh personnel statewide to ensure public safety and prevent untoward incidents.

The move comes as authorities step up vigilance during the festive season, with large crowds expected at public spaces and coastal areas.

In Chennai alone, 15,000 police officers are on duty to manage crowds at popular spots. Additional forces have been positioned at beaches and other high-footfall areas including Besant Nagar, Thiruvanmiyur, Kovalam and Mamallapuram, where large gatherings are expected.

At Marina Beach, around 1,000 officers have been deployed, and police have warned that swimming or entering the sea will not be permitted during the celebrations to avoid accidents.

Security personnel, including lifeguards and beach patrol teams, are on alert along coastline stretches, while officers have advised parents to avoid bringing young children to crowded areas for safety.

The enhanced security drive across Tamil Nadu is aimed at maintaining peace, managing crowds, and ensuring a safe start to the New Year.
