The upcoming Kilambakkam Railway Station, located near the Kilambakkam Chennai Bus Terminus (KCBT), is gearing up for a January 2026 opening, promising major relief for thousands of south-bound commuters. The ₹20-crore project is nearing completion and is expected to significantly improve last-mile connectivity for passengers using the state-of-the-art bus terminus.
Built to handle high passenger volume, the station will feature three platforms capable of accommodating 12-car EMU trains, designed to serve the rapidly developing southern suburbs of Chennai. Officials said the station will be able to handle up to 5,000 passengers per hour, reducing dependence on autos and cabs, particularly for those currently forced to travel from Tambaram with heavy luggage.
Work is progressing at a brisk pace, with 24×7 construction underway on the 450-metre skywalk connecting the bus terminus and the station across GST Road. Massive crane-lifted foundations and rising support pillars indicate speedy execution despite earlier delays.
Once operational, the Kilambakkam railway facility is expected to become a crucial transit hub, seamlessly linking road and rail services while easing congestion in existing stations. The project is viewed as a major infrastructural boost for South Chennai, benefiting commuters heading towards southern districts and suburban neighbourhoods alike.
