Pedestrians using the busy Chromepet and Tharamani flyover foot overbridges (FOBs) can expect smoother and safer access soon, with the Highways Department announcing the installation of new escalators at both locations.
The department has placed an order for five pairs of escalators at an estimated cost of ₹7.5 crore. The upgraded facility is expected to greatly benefit senior citizens, children, and persons with disabilities, easing their movement across the heavily trafficked stretches.
Old Escalators Remained Defunct for Months
The earlier escalators installed at these sites had been non-functional for several months, forcing pedestrians to either avoid the FOBs or use the stationary escalators like regular staircases. Frequent complaints and safety concerns prompted the government to step in and initiate replacement.
Officials confirmed that the defunct escalators will be dismantled, and installation of the new equipment will begin shortly.
Timeline and Execution
According to officials, installing a pair of escalators will take around 10 to 15 days, and the entire project is expected to be completed by the end of next month.
Why the Old Ones Failed
Authorities revealed that the accumulation of garbage and dust was the primary reason behind frequent malfunctions earlier, affecting mechanical efficiency and leading to repeated breakdowns.
The firm supplying the new escalators will also handle maintenance for the first year, after which the Highways Department will take over routine upkeep to ensure continuous service for the public.
The initiative is expected to significantly improve pedestrian convenience and enhance safety at two of Chennai’s most crowded commuter corridors.
