The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) has begun trial runs of real-time bus arrival information through LED display boards installed at various bus stops and terminals across the city. The system is expected to be fully operational by March 2026.
This initiative is part of the Intelligent Transport System (ITS) project, funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Under the project, LED boards have been installed at 500 bus stops and 65 bus stands and terminals. The displays will show live bus arrival times using GPS data from MTC buses and will be integrated with the Chennai One mobile app for commuter convenience.
Approximately 3,000 MTC buses have already been equipped with vehicle tracking devices. Following successful testing and trial operations, the system will be expanded to cover all MTC buses, aiming to help passengers plan their journeys more efficiently and reduce waiting times at bus stops.
