As the clock struck 12, shouts of “Happy New Year” rented the air as lakhs of people, who had congregated on the sands of the Marina beach front—one of the most preferred destinations for revellers every year—welcomed 2026 in high spirits.
It was a sea of humanity at the Marina, with crowds beginning to assemble as early as 6 PM o celebrate the occasion with great enthusiasm.
Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and leaders of various political parties greeted the people on the occasion and wished them good health and prosperity in 2026.
People cut cakes, exchanged pleasantries and burst crackers in some areas, while dazzling drone displays lit up the night sky with “Happy New Year” messages. The celebrations were also held by various residential associations across the State.
Police made elaborate security arrangements across Tamil Nadu with the deployment of one lakh personnel to ensure smooth New Year festivities.
In Chennai city alone, more than 19,000 police personnel, including 1,500 Home Guards, were deployed, particularly at beaches and along the ECR stretch. Milling crowds were also seen at Elliot’s Beach in Besant Nagar, hotels, shopping malls and theme parks.
