Talks between protesting Secondary Grade Teachers (SGTs) and senior officials from the Tamil Nadu School Education Department on Monday failed to yield a breakthrough on the demand for “equal pay for equal work.”
Representatives of the Secondary Grade Seniority Teachers’ Association (SSTA) met with department directors in the city, but despite two hours of discussions, no agreement was reached.
The SGTs have been agitating for nearly two weeks to address a long-standing pay disparity issue: teachers appointed after June 2009 receive lower basic pay despite having the same duties as their pre-2009 counterparts, a gap that widened after the Seventh Pay Commission revisions.
Association members said they will continue the protest until the government resolves the pay anomaly.
