Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president K. Selvaperunthagai has criticised statements made by party leader Praveen Chakravarthy, saying they were intended only to create confusion within the Congress party amid ongoing alliance talks ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. The controversy began after Praveen Chakravarthy, chairperson of the All India Professionals’ Congress, spoke to reporters in Coimbatore about expectations among Congress cadres for a larger share of seats and power in the state government. He said his comments were made in the interest of the party’s future.
Reacting strongly, Selvaperunthagai told DT Next that Praveen’s remarks were unnecessary and only served to create internal confusion. He emphasised that all alliance discussions were being conducted strictly according to guidelines issued by the All India Congress Committee (AICC), and there was no need for remarks that could unsettle party workers.
Selvaperunthagai said the party’s focus remains on formal alliance negotiations with partners and dismissed claims that individual statements should steer organisational strategy, reinforcing that the high command’s directives guide their approach.
The episode highlights internal tensions within the Congress as it navigates seat sharing and coalition talks with allies, particularly the DMK, ahead of the crucial elections later this year.
