Washington, Jan 9: Denmark has welcomed a US meeting next week to discuss President Donald Trump’s renewed interest in Greenland, emphasizing the importance of dialogue that includes both Denmark and Greenland. Danish Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said the talks were requested by both governments, and Greenland’s Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt confirmed the island would participate, saying, “Nothing about Greenland without Greenland.”Greenland, largely above the Arctic Circle with about 56,000 residents, is strategically important for missile defence and Arctic security. US officials, including Vice President JD Vance, criticized Denmark for insufficiently securing Greenland and suggested Trump could pursue a purchase, though military force is not planned.
European leaders, including Antonio Costa and allies such as Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, and the UK, have expressed support for Greenland’s sovereignty.
Denmark is strengthening Arctic defence with a $2.3 billion plan for naval vessels, drones, satellites, and enhanced surveillance. The Joint Arctic Command in Nuuk and the Sirius Dog Sledge Patrol maintain Danish presence and sovereignty in Greenland and the Faroe Islands.
The discussions reflect growing global interest in Greenland’s strategic and mineral-rich resources.
