Kancheepuram, Jan 9: Responding to decades-old demands from residents and visitors alike, the Kancheepuram City Corporation has announced plans to construct a brand-new bus terminus in the historic temple town and silk hub at an estimated cost of ₹40 crore. This decision comes after legal hurdles were cleared, paving the way for development of the proposed facility on an 11-acre site.
The existing central bus stand, built nearly 60 years ago on about 7 acres, was designed for a much smaller population and transport requirement. Today, more than 300 buses operate daily from the aging facility, leading to severe space shortages and forcing many vehicles to park outside or behind the terminal.
The lack of adequate space has worsened during festival seasons, causing significant inconvenience for passengers. It also meant that government buses bound for western districts such as Coimbatore, Erode, Tirupur, Dharmapuri, and Krishnagiri no longer originate from Kancheepuram, instead departing from larger hubs like Chennai or Vellore.
With the development of the new terminus, officials expect improved bus operations and better commuter comfort, particularly during peak travel periods and festivals, while enhancing the overall public transport infrastructure of the historic city.
