Officials from the Central Forensic Department on Friday inspected the stampede site at Velusamypuram in Karur district of Tamil Nadu, where 41 people lost their lives and several others were injured during an election outreach programme of TVK founder and actor-politician Vijay.

The forensic team conducted a detailed digital survey of the area, inspecting the main meeting venue and the makeshift shed housing a generator, where several victims were found dead.

The inspection, which lasted over an hour, was carried out under tight security, with entry to the site restricted.

The officials arrived in three vehicles and later proceeded to the PWD guest house near the District Collectorate, where the CBI team is stationed. The visit assumes significance as Vijay has been summoned by the CBI, which is probing the tragedy on court directions from Delhi.

Earlier, the CBI conducted extensive inquiries with officials from various departments, including the local police and the State Highways Department, besides questioning eyewitnesses, injured persons, families of the deceased, TVK functionaries, nearby residents and vendors.

Officials also examined issues related to the proximity of the highway to the venue and the adequacy of entry and exit points.
