Pongal, the harvest festival that celebrates gratitude to nature and farmers, was observed across Tamil Nadu today with great enthusiasm and traditional fervour. From villages to metropolitan cities, people marked the festival with prayers, cultural events, and community gatherings, reflecting the deep-rooted agrarian and cultural ethos of the state.
Homes were cleaned and decorated with colourful kolams, while new clothes added vibrancy to the celebrations. Families prepared the traditional sweet dish ‘Sakkarai Pongal’ using freshly harvested rice, jaggery, milk, and ghee, offering it to the Sun God as a mark of thanksgiving. Clay pots boiling over with milk symbolised prosperity and abundance, accompanied by the joyous chant of “Pongalo Pongal.”
Temples across the state witnessed special poojas and rituals from early morning, with devotees offering Pongal to deities. In rural areas, farmers performed ceremonies in their fields, expressing gratitude for a successful harvest and praying for favourable seasons ahead.
Cultural programmes, folk dances, and traditional music performances were organised in many places, showcasing Tamil Nadu’s rich heritage.
Despite modern lifestyles, Pongal continues to unite people across communities and regions, reinforcing values of gratitude, harmony with nature, and cultural pride. The grand celebrations today once again underlined Pongal’s enduring importance as one of Tamil Nadu’s most cherished festivals.
