In a significant development in the ongoing Jana Nayagan certification controversy, the Supreme Court of India today refused to entertain a plea filed by the producers of the Tamil film seeking immediate clearance by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
A bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and Augustine George Masih dismissed the petition from KVN Productions LLP, which had appealed against an interim order of the Madras High Court that stayed a single-judge directive for immediate certification. The Supreme Court observed that the Madras High Court Division Bench is already scheduled to hear the matter on January 20, 2026, and thus saw no need to intervene at this stage.
The producers had approached the apex court challenging the High Court’s decision to pause the U/A 16+ certification of Jana Nayagan — a film starring actor-politician Vijay — which was initially slated for a Pongal (January 9, 2026) release before being delayed due to the certification dispute.
