President Droupadi Murmu presided over the 77th Republic Day celebrations at Kartavya Path, New Delhi, by unfurling the National Flag on Monday, marking the start of the annual national event.
The solemn flag-unfurling was followed by the playing of the National Anthem and a booming 21-gun salute, honouring Indiaās sovereignty and democratic heritage.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed President Murmu and the chief guests ā Antonio Costa, President of the European Council, and Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission ā at the saluting base. The celebrations this year spotlighted Indiaās development journey, cultural diversity and military strength with vibrant tableaux and cutting-edge flypast displays by the Indian Air Force and other defence units.
The parade also featured a revived traditional buggy arrival for the President, adding a regal touch to the ceremony. The event reflects the nationās pride in its Constitution and unity, as citizens and dignitaries gathered to celebrate Republic Day with patriotic fervour and grandeur.
In her Republic Day eve address to the nation, the President said India is spreading a message of peace amid global conflicts, rooted in the countryās ancient tradition of universal harmony. She emphasised that peace across the world is essential for humanityās secure future and urged citizens to join the mission of making India a developed nation by 2047.
Murmu also highlighted Indiaās rapid economic growth and called for strengthening national unity, self-reliance and inclusive development. She praised contributions from diverse sectors ā including women, farmers, scientists and healthcare workers ā and reaffirmed that the ideals of justice, liberty, equality and fraternity enshrined in the Constitution continue to guide the republic in its journey ahead.
