After a brief lull, several parts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai and its suburbs, witnessed sharp spells of rain over the last two days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday said that the rain activity is likely to continue for the next two days.
The city of Chennai experienced intermittent showers, with moderate to heavy spells reported on Saturday and Sunday nights as well as on Monday morning. However, the rainfall did not disrupt normal life, and no waterlogging was reported from any part of the city.
Apart from Chennai, interior, southern, northern and coastal districts received good spells of rain. Neighbouring districts such as Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram also recorded notable rainfall. Several parts of the State received one to two centimetres of rain, while Chennai recorded light rainfall during the last 24 hours.
In its latest update, the IMD said rainfall occurred at a few places over Tamil Nadu, at many places over coastal Tamil Nadu, and at isolated places over interior Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal.
The Met office attributed the rainfall to a trough in the easterlies, which earlier lay over the southwest Bay of Bengal off the Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka coast. The system now extends from the Comorin area to the north Kerala coast, passing across the southeast Arabian Sea at about 0.9 km above mean sea level.
According to the forecast, light to moderate rain is likely at isolated places across Tamil Nadu, and at a few places over interior Tamil Nadu on Monday. Similar conditions are expected over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal on Tuesday. Dry weather is likely to prevail from January 28 to 31.
For Chennai and its neighbourhood, the IMD forecast generally cloudy skies, with moderate rain likely in some areas over the next couple of days.
