In a significant political move, the Tamil Nadu government has announced that it will boycott the traditional Republic Day tea party hosted at the Governor’s Mansion in Chennai. The announcement was made on January 26, 2026, ahead of the event scheduled for this evening.
According to official sources, neither the Chief Minister nor any of the state ministers will attend the tea party at Raj Bhavan, the official residence of Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi. The government’s decision is part of its ongoing political stance and comes as the ruling party’s top leadership is scheduled to participate in a DMK event in Thanjavur later today.
The state’s announcement confirmed that the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister will be present at the DMK’s political meeting this evening instead of attending the governor’s function. As a result, none of the ministers will represent the state government at the tea party.
While the boycott has been formally declared by the Tamil Nadu government, some state officials are expected to attend the event in their official capacities. It’s also notable that alliance partners of the ruling DMK had already indicated their intention to skip the governor’s reception in protest earlier.
