Chennai’s traffic woes are set for major relief as the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) gears up to kick off construction on the double-decker elevated stretch of the Port–Maduravoyal Expressway. Work begins soon at Padi Kuppam, where the corridor crosses the Cooum River, promising smoother commutes to Chennai Port.Spanning 20.9 km from Koyambedu to the port, the expressway starts with a 5.7 km single-deck elevated section from Vanagaram to Koyambedu. From Padi Kuppam onward, it transforms into a smart double-decker design: 25 pillars already stand over the Cooum, with new ones rising to 8 meters and the upper roadway at 16 meters. The lower deck will handle city-bound traffic, while the upper deck offers a direct, congestion-free path to the port.Both levels will operate on a toll basis, ensuring efficient maintenance. NHAI officials highlight that this innovative setup will slash travel times and decongest key arterial roads, a boon for daily commuters and port-linked logistics in Chennai’s bustling north.This project underscores Chennai’s push toward elevated infrastructure, much like the successful Porur-Vandalur stretch. With construction imminent, residents can look forward to less gridlock on routes like Poonamallee High Road.
