In a city increasingly focused on modern education and digital entertainment, the ancient Tamil martial art of Silambam is gaining attention as a holistic activity for children. Experts and instructors in Chennai are urging parents to consider enrolling their children in Silambam classes to promote physical fitness, mental discipline, and cultural awareness.
Silambam, traditionally a bamboo staff-based martial art, combines strength, agility, and rhythm. Beyond its physical benefits, it instills discipline, focus, and confidence in children, according to local instructors. “Silambam is more than a sport. It teaches patience, respect, and builds character from a young age,” says Devi Ganesh, a Silambam trainer in Taramani.
The rise of children’s Silambam classes across Chennai reflects growing parental interest. “Parents are realising that Silambam not only improves fitness but also connects children to Tamil heritage. It’s a perfect balance of tradition and modern life,” notes Ravi Kumar, head of MushroomInSilambam Classes in the city.
Experts highlight that regular practice enhances physical coordination, reflexes, and self-defense skills, while also encouraging teamwork and social interaction through group classes and community performances. Silambam is increasingly being adopted in schools and local academies across areas like T. Nagar, Velachery, and Taramani.
Parents who have enrolled their children report positive changes. “Since joining Silambam, my son has become more disciplined, confident, and physically active,” shares Lakshmi Rajan, a mother of two.
With Chennai hosting more workshops, competitions, and training centres, instructors hope that greater awareness will inspire families to introduce their children to this traditional martial art. As Devi Ganesh puts it, “Every child who learns Silambam carries forward a piece of our Tamil culture while growing stronger in mind and body.”
